Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 22, 1882

Overview

After another bad night, R. pushes on through stage problems, breakfasts in the turret, and more practical compromise at the theater, learning again how imperfectly his ideas can be realized. Stein's arrival on foot from Nuremberg is therefore a pure relief, ending the day in unqualified delight.

Thursday, June 22:

R. had a very restless night; he frequently awakes with a cry. He jokes about it, saying that I seemed to him like Lady Anne beside R[ichard] III. We go for a walk in the garden and then have breakfast in the turret. He then goes through the second act. Our friends the Grosses come along, always dear and precious to us. Fidi brings me good reports; I tell R., and he says he will turn them into an opera. We drive up to the theater (there are scenery troubles, the transformation scene too long for the music and the first forest not arranged as R. wants it). R. has to resign himself. In the evening the cap for the Knights of the Grail is decided on - a cap with a veil, to be made as much unlike a fez as possible. Our friend Stein arrives, having walked all the way from Nuremberg - great, unmitigated delight.
