Tuesday, May 16:
R. had a good night’s rest, but his first movements in the morning are always a strain on him. At lunch he talks about Ottar Jarl, which he finds very interesting in its details, if somewhat laborious to read. He also talks about a journey to Asia. At 12 o’clock he enjoys a walk in the garden, is pleased with our lovely dog Molly. He then visits Jouk, and is pleased with his nice portrait of his sister. Then the piano scores are sent off (Father, Mimi, Schön, Wolz.). There is much joking about the continual rehearsals, and in the evening he is extraordinarily cheerful. Among other things, he talks about Herr Schön’s contribution, saying that, as with most other things, it is not enough to be of help, yet it puts him under an obligation.
