Friday, March 17:
R. slept well, although yesterday he was very languid. News of the Count’s financial condition causes us increasing concern, but their feelings for each other appear to be mutual!
In the afternoon rehearsal with the military band; the marches for King and Emperor, both of them splendid, go very well. R. is wonderfully cheerful and kind with the players; he tells them that Garibaldi is coming and makes one joke after another, so that they say, “If only we had a conductor like that!” The works make a tremendous impression, and indeed a downright ecstatic one on me, since I have not heard them for quite a long time. The battle-arrayed, God-fearing peace of the Kaisermarsch brings back to me all the things for which our hearts once beat so warmly, and in the King’s March I can feel the “fair protector”!
We return home in very cheerful and exalted spirits, R. not too tired. In the evening we chat and consider!
