Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 25, 1881

Overview

Wagner resumes his cure with a morning walk and spends part of the day working on his score while Cosima rests in bed through dull, wet weather. An afternoon trip to an antique shop quickly exhausts his patience and he returns home to read. In the evening he highlights an error in Wolzogen's article on Parsifal, and the family ends the day pleasantly reading Jacolliot's chapter on elephants together.

Monday, July 25:

R. resumes his cure and goes for a walk in the early morning, then has breakfast at my bedside. He had a tolerable night. I spend a fair part of the morning in bed. R. works on his score. Dull, wet weather.

After lunch four of us go to old Frau Sanger’s antique shop. R. soon loses patience and returns home, where he reads and works. Toward evening he comes to my room to talk to me about a mistake Wolz. has made in his article: Wolz. confuses Titurel with Amfortas and connects “his line fell to me” with the Knights of the Grail! In the evening we read Jacolliot’s chapter on elephants, to the great enjoyment of the children as well.
