Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 25, 1870

Overview

Reports from Brussels describe Lohengrin’s enormous success, while Vienna news frames Die Meistersinger as supported by scholars and students against hostile opposition. Wagner is consumed with responses, publications, telegrams, and the broader uncertainty of his relations with the Bavarian king. Cosima manages the children’s lessons and gives Wagner a drawing of Uncle Adolph, delighting him despite Eva’s ill health and the day’s abyss-like uncertainty.

Content

Friday, March 25:

Letter from C. Mendès; success of Lohengrin quite enormous; Richter summoned to the royal box, presented with a golden laurel wreath, etc. Biggest success the 2nd act. Also a letter from a lecturer at the University of Vienna, which says that all the scholars and the whole of Vienna’s student body are on the side of Die Meistersinger, whereas the Jews are showing violent opposition. R. occupied with his answers to Brussels, etc. (unfortunately I). Arrival of the pamphlet on conducting. Telegram from Vienna that the fifth performance of Die Meistersinger is taking place that same evening. R. sends off a letter in French for publication.

In the evening R. asks me how I think his relations with the King of B. will end. One is looking down into an abyss and cannot foretell what will happen. (In the afternoon took the children to their physical training and dancing lessons.) Through Dr. Pohl’s agency I am able to present R. with a drawing of his Uncle Adolph in advanced age (as he knew him). R. very pleased. (“The Pope proclaims his infallibility, I proclaim your indefatigability.”) Eva not very well.
