Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 10, 1881

Overview

Cosima makes the journey to Nürnberg in a dreamlike state, moved by larksong and the passing countryside, to meet with Daniela and then Hans. The reunion with Hans proves difficult — his emotional outbursts and perceived unfairness toward Daniela make the conversation painful and unresolved — and he persuades Cosima to remain overnight for a further meeting the next morning. The day ends with the three of them together in a mood of melancholy animation, Cosima's telegram to Richard conveying cautious but weary optimism.

Sunday, July 10:

R. calls me at 8 o’clock, I make haste, he and Siegfried take me to the station. Parting! Oh, how strong the feeling that we should die together! Journey as in a dream, and dreamy delight in lark song and villages. At 1 o’clock Lusch at the station, very, very good, the poor, dear child! [Telegram to Wahnfried enclosed, announcing C. W.’s safe arrival in Nürnberg.] Sad accounts of her father’s state of health. She leaves me at 2 o’clock. The sad time! Who could, who would wish to be happy? Hans with me from 4 to 6:30. Attempt to quell the violent outbursts on his part and overcome his unfairness toward Daniela. Unsolvable task! He begs me to stay here through tomorrow morning, since he has not, as he intended, explained to me what he wants. I consent. [Enclosed C. W.’s telegram to R. W., sent at 7:25 P.M.: “Good spirits, if little yet achieved, another interview arranged for tomorrow morning subject to your approval. Would then catch 1 o’clock train. Also perhaps dentist. My whole being comes to you in greeting.”] Evening all three together! Melancholy animation!
