Diary Entry of March 23, 1870

Overview

Telegrams from Brussels announce a major Lohengrin success and excite Wagner’s circle despite the severe snowy weather at home. The lawyer reports that Hans is traveling to Berlin but may not remain long enough to resolve matters, leaving the outcome to providence.

Wednesday, March 23:

Telegrams from Brussels, Lohengrin a great success and much excitement among our friends. Horrible weather here, snow drifts, etc. I drive to the dancing lesson with the children. In the morning a letter from the lawyer; Hans is now on his way to Berlin; but he is required to spend a month or two there, and he says he has to be back in Florence on May 1. Well, as God wills.
