Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 25, 1881

Overview

The day is marked by Rausch's modest Protestant funeral, which prompts reflections on the spiritual simplicity of Protestantism compared to Catholic ceremony. Practical theater matters intrude with a visit from Brandt and Staudt to inspect the gas pipes for the festival. The evening closes on an emotionally powerful note with a reading from Gobineau's book of a Persian play about Kassem's wedding.

Content

Saturday, June 25:

R. had a somewhat restless night, but he takes his waters. I have a discussion with poor Herr Kohler, who is very difficult.

In the afternoon, our good Rausch's funeral, moving in its simplicity; the superiority of Protestantism over the Catholic Church in its detachment and lack of symbols of power. A visit from Herr Brandt and Herr Staudt - to everybody's astonishment, the gas pipes are still in good condition.

In the evening, a Persian play from the Count's book, Kassem's Wedding - extremely moving!
