Tuesday, May 31:
At 2 o'clock. Delight in being back at home. The garden very beautiful, R. pleased with his armorial salon. Fatigue soon drives us up to bed.
Wednesday, June 1:
All slept well, and the weather is glorious. In the morning R. reads Dogme et philosophie in the summerhouse and feels content; we spend a long time in the garden. Molly presents us with some puppies and abandons them to follow R.
We have our coffee in the summerhouse and talk about lyric poetry, on which subject the Count agrees entirely with R., declaring incidentally that the Italian language is thoroughly unpoetic. While I am enjoying the lovely air with R., I tell him one really ought to spend the whole day in the woods and in the evening listen to one of his works; he says I am right, and that watching a drama together is a desirable occupation, for then one feels part of the human family. In the evening we have a philosophical conversation with the Count.
