Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 21, 1881

Overview

Richard wakes laughing from another dream of Cosima departing, then finds himself amiably exiled from his own house as preparations for a secret birthday surprise and children's rehearsals fill every room. The arrival of the Standhartners brings warm memories of Vienna, and the evening passes in cheerful company as the Count elaborates his philosophical ideas to the assembled friends.

Content

Saturday, May 21:

R. dreams that I go away and that I tell Jouk., who tries to intercede, that he is a sheep, which makes us all laugh. There is nowhere for him to go - the Eyssers are working on the surprise, and in the hall we are holding rehearsals!

At lunch he says merrily that he wishes he could be given his presents right away! At coffee time the Standhartners appear, father and daughter; introductions and memories of Vienna. For us, “juvenile rehearsals.”

In the evening R. talks about the Count’s essay, and the Count explains his ideas to our friends. Cheerful atmosphere.
