Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 4, 1881

Overview

A piano rehearsal of Rheingold proves deeply dispiriting for Wagner, with poor staging, lighting, and scenery reminding him of his early struggles in Magdeburg decades earlier. The couple drives home in near silence, and the failed rehearsal weighs on the mood through a late supper, with Wagner unable to steer conversation away from the disappointment.

Content

Wednesday, May 4:

R. had a good night. I write letters. He goes to see Materna, who starts to cry again; R. cuts her short by saying he has not come to hear all yesterday's twaddle over again. I also visit the singers. We come together again at 3 o'clock and eat cozily alone.

Then to the Rheingold rehearsal, which is held with piano; the first scene just about all right, but everything else, lighting, scenery, etc., is very poor. R., depressed, says that he experienced such things in Magdeburg 50 years ago and never thought to see them repeated!

We drive home in almost complete silence and eat our supper around midnight, what little conversation we have being continually steered by R. toward the sad experience we have just been through.
