Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 6, 1881

Overview

After a good night's rest interrupted only by early crowing cocks, Wagner composes four new minutes of music for *Parsifal* despite stormy weather. The couple dines with friends, where Wagner speaks with great feeling about the Boer War and his indignation at European indifference to the Boers' struggle against British forces. The evening passes quietly in conversation.

Sunday, March 6:

A good night, but terrible weather; R. says the cocks began to crow before midnight - that was a sign. R. writes some additional music for Parsifal - 4 minutes of music. We dine at the Grosses', R. sees the Kolbs for the first time in years. He talks with passionate feeling about the Boers, indignant that nothing is being done by us in their support.

When we leave our friends, R. says, 'I find a dinner like that much more agreeable here than at the Ouroussoffs'. We spend the evening in chat.
