Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 25, 1880

Overview

R. was unable to work steadily, making mistakes, lapsing into absent-minded anxiety, and flying into fury over Voltz and Batz wanting 60,000 marks to return rights in his works. Later he reviewed the end of Götterdämmerung and declared he would never again write anything so intricate, then took comfort in old letters that showed his artistic convictions unchanged and in the cheerful presence of the children.

Content

Thursday, November 25:

R. had a good night, but he is in no mood for work, makes writing mistakes, is absent-minded, has great feelings of anxiety, and when the Voltz and Batz affair crops up, they want to sell back to him their rights in his works for 60,000 marks, he is quite beside himself with rage.

In the evening, before supper, he goes back to his work, glances through the conclusion of Götterdämmerung, and says that never again will he write anything as complicated as that.

Frl. Uhlig has sent the final copies of R.'s letters to her father; R. reads many things from them to us, and we are astonished at how unchanged his feelings about his art and the public have remained.

Delight in our children, who are cheerful, amiable, and good-looking.
