Diary Entry of November 18, 1880

Overview

After a good night, R. enjoyed a bright breakfast, a walk in the palace gardens with Marke, and the comfort of finding the household in order. Patronage matters and fresh donations moved him, but the local climate and obligations wore on his nerves until a quiet evening together restored him somewhat.

Thursday, November 18:

R. had a good night and is in good spirits. We have a cheerful breakfast, friendly sunshine lighting up the salon. Are we here? The new cook, sent from Munich, is acquitting herself well. R. goes for a walk in the palace gardens with Marke.

Toward evening friend Wolzogen; all kinds of Society of Patrons affairs, which rather tire R.; but he is touched by such evidence of good will as renewed gifts from Herr Irwine, a Scot in Leipzig, and from Herr Rosenlehner, who still does not wish to be named; last month brought in about 8,000 marks.

The need to adapt to conditions here, the heat, the wind, all of this seems to oppress R., he is again very irritable, but an evening spent by ourselves restores calm, and the Illustrirte Zeitung, reporting a gathering of astronomers, provides, if not exactly pleasure, at least some amusement.
