Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 10, 1880

Overview

Their morning discussion continued the previous night’s irritation with Coppelia, which they dismissed as shallow Parisian prettiness. A royal bouquet marked Lohengrin, and while the tragedy struck her strongly, Richard grumbled about the conducting and staging even as he took real pleasure in finding the King unchanged.

Wednesday, November 10:

Our morning conversation leads us to Coppélia, a vulgarity of melody that is peculiarly Parisian, which reminds us of pictures in newspapers, such as La Vie Moderne, which L. has sent us. We have a sitting at Gedon's with Lenbach.

A magnificent bouquet from the King inaugurates the Lohengrin performance. R. watches it from the royal box, we from below. Otherwise a completely empty theater. On me it is the tragedy in particular which makes an impact. R., dissatisfied with the tempi, tells Levi that conductor and producer deserve to be sent God knows where. But he got much pleasure from his meeting with the King, whom he found completely unchanged.
