Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 6, 1880

Overview

The morning was consumed by talk of The Merchant, which remained all-important despite a discouraging performance. After much indecision they went to Lenbach’s gathering and enjoyed it at first, but the night ended in Richard’s violent agitation and left her brooding over suffering and sin.

Content

Saturday, November 6:

(Morning) Discussion about The Merchant, which completely fills my being, in spite of the dismal performance.

Then much vacillation about spending the evening at Lenbach's. R. wants not to go, then to go; in the end we do go and have a nice party, which does not tire R. But at the conclusion there is so much agitation and fury on his part, and as a result such a terrible night, that the miseries of life and original sin trouble my soul almost more than ever before!
