Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 30, 1880

Overview

R. begins the day deeply agitated, hating the saloon carriage and feeling low at having left Naples behind. Yet the departure from Venice turns unexpectedly warm, with Mimi’s touching farewell and the singers escorting us to the station, and the dreaded carriage proves better than feared.

Saturday, October 30:

"Goes he, led by a friendly hand, depressed and sad to a colder land," sings R., who feels great agitation and uneasiness, rising to fury, after having inspected the saloon carriage, which he dislikes exceedingly, in rough weather. He is sad at having left Naples.

Departure at 6 o'clock, after bidding a warm farewell to Mimi, so touching in her friendliness. The singers who had so often upset R. arrive, and this time they really please us and rouse our spirits as, singing all the while, they precede our gondola and accompany us as far as the station. Farewell, Venice!

Departure at 6 o'clock. The saloon carriage much better than expected.
