Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 22, 1880

Overview

R. had slept well, and breakfast was cheerful as he left the villa arrangements largely to me with a new resolve toward patience. At the station our first wait for the children ended in alarm and irritation when they were not on the expected train, only for the confusion to be cleared up and the reunion to come at last. Seeing them healthy, affectionate, and especially Siegfried so tender turned the whole day joyful and noisy.

Content

Sunday, August 22:

R. slept well, the children are in Florence. Breakfast in good spirits. R. wishes to leave all the arrangements in the villa to me. For himself he has now adopted the motto "Let the phantom do what it will," to remind him to be patient.

At 12 in the villa with the councilor. At 3:30 drove to the station to fetch the children. Waiting, arrival of the train, the children not on it. Vexation, worry; tomorrow he will send Georg to meet them. I want to go to the post office to see whether a telegram has arrived, nothing; provoking thoughts that they might have stayed in Florence to see the sights; return to the carriage, the coachman and Georg tell us that it was a different train. Cheerful and animated return to the station. At last the train, the children with us again, all of them good, healthy, affectionate, happy! Siegfried very tender.

Meal at 5 o'clock. No end to the chatter! Then to the cathedral and the villa. Some concern for me in that the children traveled very expensively.
