The mood shifts when Claire reports that Hans may be resisting the divorce and that Cosima’s mother is speaking against her. Monday, February 14:
R. again at work; fine weather, sleigh ride, a landscape of sugar candy and marzipan. When we return home, a letter from Claire, saying Mama has told her Hans does not want a divorce—this she heard through Mme Ollivier. Besides this, many unpropitious things about my mother. I write to them both and struggle against bitter feelings.
