Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 28, 1880

Overview

After a good night, R. spent the day writing letters and correcting the biography for the printers. Yet beneath the productivity lay a sorrowful mood as he contemplated leaving the South and taking her back north, insisting that since she had no wishes of her own he must wish on her behalf, before they ended the day quietly in the vineyards.

Friday, May 28:

A good night and a cheerful day. R. writes today and tomorrow letters to Wolzogen, Lenbach, Schemann, and corrects the biography, which he sends to friend Wolzogen for the printers.

A curious mood overtook him yesterday and overtakes him again today as he contemplates our surroundings: sorrow at the prospect of having to take me home to the North. When I try to tell him what pain he causes me by saying this, he observes that, since I have no wishes of my own, it is all the more important for him to wish in my behalf. And he adds that he himself is so completely finished with everything that this is now really all he cares about.

We chose a spot up in the vineyards to settle down and spent a cheerful evening there, though cut short by our fatigue.
