Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 21, 1880

Overview

R. had a slightly restless night but was not ill and kept working through the biography, while news arrived of Hans’s concert in Bayreuth and moved both of us on the children’s behalf. He spent the day with the family by the sea, delighted by a mock boat ride and by the moonlit terrace, even as his reading left him melancholic.

Saturday, February 21:

R. had a somewhat restless night, but he does not seem to be unwell, and he continues going through our biography. Friend Wolzogen sends us details concerning Hans’s concert in Bayreuth!!... R. and I very affected by it on account of the children.

After the sitting for Herr J., R. says to him jokingly that his picture will be a “Stabat mater colorosa,” for the amiable painter wishes to paint me in the Maharajah!...

R. goes to join the children on the seafront, and he improvises a boat ride around the Donna Anna, which gives him great pleasure. Before going off for his evening siesta he tells us what Gleizes has to say about the Last Supper, which he sees as the abandonment of meat-eating, the spiritual lamb replacing the real one. R. says the book makes him feel melancholy, but he intends to finish it.

After he has had his rest, he calls us all out on the terrace, wonderful moonlight, peculiar feeling of being at home here, because away from the world, and a dream! Stillness and life. We end the day with whist.

(Yesterday R. spoke of the Empress’s curious habit of persecuting people about whom she once raved, just like Nietzsche. He said, “One can give up mistaken allegiances, as, for example, mine with Feuerbach, but one should not then abuse them.”)
