Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 7, 1880

Overview

R. slept well but dreamed I was displeased with him, and the poor weather kept him from walking. He watched me from the terrace, and the day ended quietly with a game of whist and a story about Wallenstein and the dangers of trusting devils.

Saturday, February 7:

R. had a good night, but he dreamed that I was not well disposed toward him. The weather is not good enough for him to venture out on a walk. I go into town, he watches me from the terrace, and we wave to each other at every turning.

Whist in the evening. At lunch R. tells us an anecdote about Wallenstein, how the soldier advised him to go to Vienna with the 100 “men in armor” and set everything to rights; W. felt the advice was not bad, but “Who puts his faith in devils...”; this made such an impression on him.
