Friday, February 6:
R. had a good night’s rest; morning brings the B. Blätter with his article, and he is pleased with it. The weather is fine, and we drive together into town, where he buys a hat for Siegfried. He returns from the drive in a contented mood, but I notice that his skin always turns noticeably red when he has been in the open air.
I had parted from him in order to leave cards, among others at Count Arnim’s. In connection with this acquaintanceship R. says: “What has outraged virtue got to do with avenging a crime? If Count Arnim comes to me, I can be of some avail, but not when I go to him.”
In the evening I read to him an article by a new contributor to the B. Bl., Dr. Kirchner; it reads quite well. His eyes are badly strained.
