Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 1, 1880

Overview

The new year began late after a long night, so R. skipped the studio because he was exhausted and dealing with inflamed eyes. The children and I went to Tannhäuser, which I found deeply moving, and I was quietly relieved not to have R. present for the public applause he would have drawn at the Munich theater.

Thursday, January 1:

We did not get to bed until 2 o’clock, in consequence of which R., very tired, decides against visiting the studio. I am there at first by myself, then with the children. R. has an inflammation of the eyes. Dr. Bezold is not worried by it.

For me and the children, a performance of Tannhäuser. Very good in many respects, and for me overwhelmingly impressive; the first scene blissfully relaxing. I do not miss R., inasmuch as a few things would have vexed him greatly, and he was glad to avoid the ovation which would certainly have been given him here in the Munich theater.
