Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 29, 1870

Overview

Cosima passes a sleepless night filled with anxious imaginings but rises in unexpectedly cheerful spirits. Wagner continues working, humorously addressing the Siegfried statuette as if it were demanding his labor. Legal news about the divorce suggests deliberate delay, and the day ends quietly with Ali Baba, exhaustion, and an early retreat to bed.

Our lawyer comes to see us, he thinks that Simson, the lawyer in Berlin, is delaying the divorce out of malice. In the evening finished reading “Ali Baba” with Lusch. Early to bed, feeling very worn out.
