Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 17, 1879

Overview

Sickness continued to dominate, with Siegfried feverish and Eva suffering acute rheumatism, deepening the family's sense of confinement and sadness. A visit from Wolzogen briefly lightened the mood, but concern for Eva hung over the evening.

Content

Wednesday, December 17:

Siegfried is still feverish, and Eva is down with acute rheumatism. R. is still confined to the upstairs rooms; our imprisonment and, above all, the illness of the children make us both feel a little melancholy. Eva sobs violently when she sees her father again; during the night she saw us both lying dead!

But we have one cheerful hour with friend Wolzogen, though the evening is rather gloomy, for Eva's condition worries us.
