Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 12, 1879

Overview

The inflammation worsened and R. blamed the ice packs, while domestic mishaps added to the tension in the house. Careful concealment, reading aloud, and constant companionship eventually restored his spirits, though he remained bitterly dismissive of Jews and other burdens he felt attached to him.

Friday, December 12:

R. did not have too bad a night, but the inflammation has got worse; he thinks because of the ice packs which have been prescribed for him, and he becomes very impatient. On top of this, various domestic troubles, the pipes freezing, the bath overflowing, the bells out of order. In spite of all attempts at concealment R. gets to know a little about them. Great care over his eyes. Reading aloud! The whole day spent with him, and as a result good spirits restored at last. Finished Herr v. Weber’s book and started on a book about the Talmudic Jews... R. wishes all Jews would drop off of him, “like warts,” for which there is no known remedy; one should not try to check them, just ignore them.
