Tuesday, July 29:
R. slept well and finishes his article, telling me about it at the end; he is somewhat tired and says he does not intend to write anything more. Fine weather; outing to the Schlehenmühle via Wolfsbach, splendid walk through the woods as far as Bruckmühl, nice drive home; we were 16 in all; stop on the highway, a merry sight, R. in very good spirits, and his slight vexation over a detour and the coachman’s heedlessness is soon forgotten. Delight in our pretty countryside.
In the evening friend Feustel; much politics, he entirely for Bismarck, whereupon R. with splendid vivacity points out to him in what way B. is unequal to the task Fate has imposed on him. The evening not too unpleasant for R., and he goes to bed in good spirits.
