Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 11, 1879

Overview

R. spent a rough, weather-bound day recovering from a cold, while the narrator tried to make sense of the damp gloom by talking of Naples and roses. After a welcome reply approving her request, the evening turned to Calderon, whose playful wit she found more awkward than amusing.

Content

Friday, July 11:

A restless night for R.; he caught cold yesterday; talked a lot about Naples, to console ourselves for the wild, blustery weather, which robs us of our pleasure in the roses. R. revises his announcement, and immediately afterward the reply comes from Herr Bürkel, the secretary, granting my request. Satisfaction!

R. shows me two portraits in the Illustrirte: General Manteuffel, now governor in Alsace, and Lionel Rothschild. These two pictures tell the whole story - Prussianism and Judaism!

In the evening we read Calderon's burlesque Cefalo and Pocris, but only the first act - I in particular find this kind of wit embarrassing.
