Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 15, 1879

Overview

A day of work and celebration is marked by music that moves the diarist profoundly, especially “Wotan’s Farewell” and the crowning of Parsifal. The emotional intensity of the performances deepens her sense of consolation, though the night closes with sorrow brought on by Lulu.

Saturday, March 15:

R. had a good night, and he works. Today we celebrate the recovery of our friend Wolz., and after lunch Herr Rub. plays his arrangement of “Wotan’s Farewell.” At one point - I forget where - R. says, “That always pleases Lesimple so much,” an interjection which utterly disturbed my mood for a while!

But then he plays to us the crowning of Parsifal and Kundry’s tears, and it echoes inside me like an eternal blessing; I see Tristan full of yearning, stretched out on his bed, and hear sublime consolation, deepest peace. In the evening games, ending, however, with a deep, deep sorrow which Lulu causes me.
