Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 15, 1869

Overview

Vreneli's remark that Richard now knows he works for Cosima and Fidi gives Cosima pleasure, while the poor Bamberg girl chosen as Christkind becomes part of their Christmas plan. Richard works, Cosima remains weak and tries to hide it from him, and Lusch's lesson takes her to Countess Bassenheim. Claire's letter about doubts over Cosima's capital adds another financial irritation.

Wednesday, December 15:

Vreneli gave me great pleasure today when she said, "Now the master knows what he is working for," meaning me and Fidi. The Christkind came, a very poor girl from Bamberg; we intend to dress her nicely, so that she can summon the children after Knecht Ruprecht, and then give her presents too.

R. works. I still very weak; it looks as if my strength will never return. I must just take care that R. never notices how weak I feel. In the afternoon to Countess B. with Lusch. In the evening, Christmas bits and pieces.

Letter from Claire, saying my new marriage raises doubts about paying me my capital, whereas my proposal is that it should be invested for me there! Very pretty!
