Overview

Both R. and the father were unwell, with R. suffering chest pain and the father taking to bed. The narrator stayed with the father, reading aloud and keeping spirits up with a humorous comparison about Bismarck.

Content

Saturday, August 24:

R. is somewhat run down; his chest hurts him when he sings. My father is also ill, and even has to take to his bed. I keep him company, read him the article on Cromwell in Voltaire’s Dictionnaire, and later amuse R. by saying that Bismarck ought to appear in the German Reichstag like C. in the English parliament, with a clock.
