Friday, August 9:
R. somewhat run down; he has pains in his chest and a slight hemorrhage. I implore him not to work, and try to ensure that he talks as little as possible; in the evening friend Klindworth plays us a Chopin prelude, which gives R. great pleasure. My entry today will be short, for the whole day's effort consisted in taking good care of R. It was the playing of the new page the day before yesterday, and of the first act yesterday, which put such a strain on him.
Any contact with others is too much for him, he says with a laugh: "I must retire with you to Paris - there one is not molested." Herr Glagau's pamphlet has interested him. Socialists and the Catholic Party are said to be in alliance, and R. thinks many people who can no longer go along with National Liberalism and Bismarckism have sought refuge beneath the Catholic party banner.
