Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 9, 1878

Overview

R.'s sleep improves slightly, but the bad weather still interrupts his cure and triggers an unsettling dream about social rank at the table. A drive to the Waldhutte brings relief, and the day closes with admiration for the scenery, memories of Tribschen, and a peaceful return to bed.

Tuesday, July 9:

R. slept tolerably well, but the unfavorable weather causes him to stop his cure; he dreamed that during a meal I sat down on a raised chair, my former mother-in-law, Frau v. Bülow, to one side, while he had to go to a place right at the end of the table, which astonished him.

At lunch he says, “Now I know what you meant by it: you wanted to live like Saint Radegunde, to ornament and bedeck the table for your lover, but to possess nothing yourself.”

The weather clears up, we drive out to the Waldhütte. During the drive we admire Eva’s beauty, then R. recalls Tribschen, our drive to the Rütli. “Those were sublime and blessed times,” he says. The air is pleasant and fresh, and we enjoy a nice evening. On our return home we go straight to bed.
