Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 8, 1878

Overview

A rough night and lingering illness limit R.'s activity, so the day stays quiet and inward. Reading, a flattering article, and a private evening conversation provide comfort, turning worries about the future into intimate exchange.

Content

Monday, July 8:

Night disturbed by constant furious barking of the dogs; at lunch I amuse R. by reminding him that, after pacifying the dogs from the window, he got irritably back into bed, saying, “I shall stop paying tax on Putz.”

Still some blood - no walk; some business letters, vexation over the lawyer in Dresden. I continue the catalogue with Herr Glasenapp. Various things from the past read through with deep emotion. R. worn out - avoidance of any conversation.

This restores him, he is enjoying the French book. Friend Wolzogen reads me an article by Dr. Eiser about Schopenhauer and R., very nice. Spent a cozy evening entirely alone with R., chatting intimately, memories, children’s future, joys, griefs, and worries, all transfigured through conversation! Also talked about Alcibiades and Socrates.
