Wednesday, December 19:

R. says he needs nobody; he has everything he needs for his happiness, everything. He wants only to enjoy it in peace. He works. Arrival of a large Gloucester cheese from Herr Schlesinger, which gives R. great pleasure. In the evening we hear from London of the dispatch of another cheese, Stilton, which makes us laugh. R. was once again followed by an individual who inspired no great feeling of trust in him. He said: “I wouldn’t have offered him a pinch of snuff from my box.” Sorrow over Fidi, who, quite contrary to his usual habit, does not share something we gave him with his sisters.
