Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 18, 1877

Overview

A better night follows as the pressure from Batz eases, and practical progress is made when the promised sonata copy finally arrives. The evening Hamlet reading is especially affecting, and a walk in the fields provides a calm interlude.

Sunday, November 18:

The “dwindling Batz” permits a better night. Feustel has returned from Munich, tells us Baron Perfall is offering 1% of the proceeds for the King; friend Feustel has refused this illusory aid and says legal measures will accordingly be taken at the end of the year.

R. works. Letter from the firm of Gebrüder Hug: R.'s public threat has had its effect, for they send the copy of the A Major Sonata. In the evening Hamlet. R.'s reading is unutterably affecting, he himself nobly sublime, deeply moving both personally and artistically.

In the afternoon we went for a walk together in the fields.
