Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 18, 1877

Overview

After ordinary duties, an excursion to the theater leaves a powerful impression, especially once inside the building, which feels grand and fitting for the work itself. Yet the surrounding objects connected with production, including costumes and photographs, repel the composer and renew his resistance to further dealings with the company, before the evening ends in a calm, moonlit landscape.

Content

Saturday, August 18:

Lessons and house and correspondence. In the afternoon a drive up to the theater, strange impression; going inside, a tremendous impression, as magnificent as the work itself. On the other hand, the costumes, the photographs, arouse in R. an utter repugnance against concerning himself with the Ring again. Spent the evening in Bürgerreuth, nice atmosphere, pretty scenery, and friendly moonlight.
