Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 16, 1877

Overview

The composer apologizes for his bad mood and explains that poor health leaves him vulnerable to dark thoughts, even in dreams. The day also brings a substantial gift from English friends and a favorable article about the festival, though the return of press chatter only revives frustration over the compromises forced by public access.

Thursday, August 16:

R. begs me most movingly to forgive his bad mood. He is so unwell physically that it takes nothing at all to bring on black thoughts. I could see that from his dreams, he says.

Friend Dannreuther brought with him £500 from our English friends; decision to return the money with thanks. The conductor Herr Levi sends us an article from Blätter für literarische Unterhaltung entitled “The Festival and Its Reviewers,” probably written by Prof. Bernays (it is signed Uhde). It is very well disposed toward the festival and well written, but it is upsetting to see all the press’s trivialities paraded once again. R. says the great mistake was being obliged to demand payment for admittance and, in consequence, having to allow such people in as well.
