Thursday, July 12:
R. had a bad night, following an unhealthy diet; he says, “Perhaps it was just so that I should see the falling star,” and tells me that a magnificently shining object sank before his eyes. He at once thought of the King.
When the falcon was circling, he said to me, “That falcon is thinking, ‘Wagner must be given good fortune, for beside him is the only being for whom it is worth putting up with life.’”
Around noon we go with the children to see the students’ wine cask. In the evening a wonderful drive to the Wolfsbrunnen; magnificent sunset. Evening on the terrace, a perfect idyll. Eight happy days! And on the homeward journey another lucky omen, a green spider on R.’s hat, “spider at night.” In no other district have we felt so much at home; hardly anywhere else have we been so much left to ourselves.
