Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 10, 1877

Overview

Fidi perked up again, but the diarist was confined indoors and put on a milk diet after consulting Dr. Zeroni. While the others walked to the Wolfsbrunnen, they continued reading about Paris, and R. drew a cynical conclusion about how the middle class functions to shield the powerful from the poor.

Tuesday, July 10:

Fidi lively again, I on the other hand confined to my room; consultation with Dr. Zeroni, milk diet. R. and the children go for a walk to the Wolfsbrunnen.

We are still reading Maxime Ducamp’s Paris, each with a different volume, and R. comes to the conclusion that one class of people there — roughly the middle class, made up of employees — stands out, but its sole function is to protect the upper classes, which are bad, from the lower classes, which are equally useless.
