Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 8, 1877

Overview

A drive into the woods and a lunch with friends made for a satisfying Sunday, and the group’s discussion turned to religion. R. argued for monasteries as centers of active charity and personal service, even saying that, had he known of such a place earlier in life, he might have entered one himself.

Content

Sunday, July 8:

Drive in the morning to the Königstein, splendid woods. At lunch our friends from Mannheim and R. Pohl — also Prof. grows more profound each time.

After the reading a conversation develops with the Old Catholic priest about religion; R. speaks in favor of reviving the monasteries, from which all activities should originate — visiting the poor, the imprisoned, all those who are suffering in any way. He says, “If, before I met my good wife, I had known of any such monastery, I should have entered it and not lightly left it again.”
