Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 18, 1877

Overview

The day was filled with copying work, children’s lessons, and business correspondence, while news from Hanover confirmed resistance to staging the Nibelungen there. The reports made clear how distorted public accounts had been, though R. seemed unbothered by the prospect of no performances in Hanover.

Content

Monday, June 18:

For me, copying Parsifal and lessons for the children; for R., Guizot's History of the English Revolution and some business matters with Feustel. My father sends us a letter from Herr v. Bronsart to him, from which it transpires that Herr von Hülsen is utterly hostile to the idea of having the Nibelungen performed in Hanover.

“Are you quite blind to the fiasco in Bayreuth and the fiasco in London, where the people streamed out of the hall during the Ring pieces?” Hülsen writes to Bronsart. So this is what comes of the lying newspaper reports! However, R. does not mind at all now that there will be no performances in Hanover.
