Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 6, 1877

Overview

Siegfried's birthday was marked by gifts and family feeling, including a construction set R. had bought in London. Alongside the celebration came serious talk of money, disappointed supporters, and shifting negotiations over the festival plans, all of which weighed heavily on the day.

Content

Wednesday, June 6:

Siegfried’s birthday! My darling child! Distribution of gifts all around. A construction set for Fidi, acquired in London by R. personally.

Bad weather, consequently no outing. Letters from Feustel! Rebellion among the people who had been put off with promises till after the London concerts. I beg R. to make use of my 40,000 francs; along with the London proceeds that makes about 50,000 marks. I firmly believe that my children will not hold this against me, and I know that God will bless them for it.

The negotiations have been broken off with Leipzig and taken up with Hanover; Herr Unger, I hope, after his behavior in London, done with. God bless you, my child!
