Wednesday, May 23:
R. is very tired and today goes only to the Athenaeum, where Dr. Siemens has arranged a small dinner for him. I visit Westminster Abbey. Canon Hartford shows me all the features of this remarkable house of God. I found it very moving that Elisabeth’s Prayer was played on the organ at the conclusion of the service. The crowds dispersed in silence, and above their heads this pure soul spread her wings; they return to their lives, silent and unheeding, while she yields herself singing to Death!
In the evening a letter from Loldi, which affects us very much. I reply to her at once, promising to visit her. R. thanks the King for his telegram of congratulations.
