Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 19, 1869

Overview

Siegfried's rash and sleepless nights worry the household, while Lulu writes Liszt for his birthday and Cosima answers Nietzsche. Richard returns from town despondent over a malicious Kladderadatsch image of the King, and Cosima is too unwell for Don Quixote. A recent album leaf for Servais quietly records Richard's artistic generosity.

Tuesday, October 19:

Wretched nights; Siegfried’s rash is worrying us very much. Lulu writes to her grandpapa on his birthday. I reply to Prof. Nietzsche. Visit from Frau Am Rhyn.

After lunch very unwell, but with the children to meet R., who returns home from town in very despondent mood, having discovered in Kladderadatsch a terrible picture of the P.C. ing, in which wicked things are suggested of him.

I very unwell in the evening, so that we are not capable even of reading Don Quixote. On Sunday R. sent Herr Servais a leaf for his album: concluding canon of Siegfried and Brünnhilde.
