Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 13, 1877

Overview

Work resumed, though London business was still unsettled and troubling news arrived about Countess Voss. R. answered the Duke with a generous letter and sent his collected works, while the evening was spent reading criticism and classical scholarship.

Content

Tuesday, March 13:

Started work again! London arrangements still not clear. Sad news of Countess Voss, she is going blind! R. writes a splendid letter to the Duke and sends him his collected writings.

In the evening we read a very nice article by a Dr. Gehring about Die Walküre in Vienna (Deutsche Zeitung), in which at least hints are made about the impertinence of this production and the remarks about Bayreuth connected with it. Afterward read F. Schlegel’s Poetry of the Greeks and Romans.
