Friday, March 9:
Departure for Meiningen; arrival at 4 o’clock, the Duke and his wife receive us on the steps of the palace, in which we are given very fine rooms.
To the theater in the evening: Esther and Le Malade imaginaire with the promotion scene, the latter much too long drawn out, but the comedy excellently done; Esther very touching in spite of many weaknesses — “the sentimentality good, no naiveté,” R. says.
In the evening the Duke and his wife have tea in our rooms, cordial and cheerful conversation.
