Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 23, 1877

Overview

She remains in the same subdued mood while handling work with the children, though R. is more cheerful and attentive to the rehearsals' impressions. They discuss how stage effects can dull the music's magic, and the evening ends with reading Xenophon and enjoying the exchange between Glaucon and the others.

Content

Friday, February 23:

Arose and went to work, still in the same mood. R. fairly well and also relatively cheerful. We talk about the fine impressions left by the rehearsals; he feels it was only the “poor players” who gave or showed him anything; he agrees with me when I say that all the magic was lost through Doepler’s rags and patches.

Frau Herwegh sends us her husband’s poems; the most wretched doggerel. When someone is lost to all consideration and at the same time can produce nothing better, what a dismal state he is in! R. writes in this sense to Frau Herwegh; I ask him not to send the letter!

In the evening read Xenophon’s Memorabilia; much delight in the conversation with Glaucon.
