Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 21, 1877

Overview

Wednesday, February 21:

Thought of Luther, who saved Melanchthon’s life through fervent prayer - if only my soul’s fear could do likewise with what I dare not speak!

R. works on his dialogue; in the evening did some reading; during the day the books. Tiredness.

Just as chronic suffering brings on attacks which are overcome until the end at last arrives, so, too, is life a constant suffering with ever-recurring crises, until all strength is drained away - gladly would I know when mine will be exhausted!

R. writes to Herr Hillebrand in Florence; his book about the French pleases him very much. “But that’s the way it is,” he says. “When a German comes along who is worth something and could be of help, sure enough he is living God knows where and editing Italia.”
